Kavanaugh Ridge Run & group camping

August 31, 2024

Another outstanding camping trip Wednesday thru Saturday, wheeling trip in the close by area Thursday & Friday, and then topped off with our run up to Kavanaugh Ridge & then over to Dunderberg Mine/3 Cabins for lunch on Saturday.  We had a total of 13 rigs, including two 1st timers from the Riverside area & one repeat attendee from the San Diego area as well as 2 groups from Tehachapi.  Some camped at our usual campsite, some stayed in Bridgeport and then some at Virginia Creek Settlement.

As promised, Greg W led to us to some of his and our favorite Bridgeport area trails. On Thursday , Greg led us on a really interesting Run on the USMC Base just off Hwy 108.  Pickle Meadows and then over to Levitt Lake.  And Wow! a really interesting road up & over to the lake.  We all were glad we had 4 Low.   Friday was around the ghost town of Masonic where we saw some of the really old structures including what is still left of some old trams.

Then on Saturday the campers along with those that stayed in motels and those that came up  from home just  for the Saturday Kavanaugh Run met just off Virginia Creek Road & went up to Kavanaugh Ridge.  No issues on this trail and some…not surprisingly…great views at the ridge and looking down on one of the areas best views.  This time I was able to see/distinguish 9 separate lakes…w/o moving around.  Very impressive.

We then went over to the Dunderberg Mine/3 Cabins area where we had lunch.  Getting to this area took about an hour & is a great place to relax & reflect on a great trip & enjoy some down time.  Several folks also went down to the Stamp Mill area.

After this lunch break most went back to town or camp.  Several of us continued the march & explored the close by Dynamo Dam.  This is where they produced electricity for the town of Bodie starting back 1892.  Transmitted the electricity the 13 miles up & into Bodie.  Quite a feat in those days.

Drama??  Yes we had a bit.  My son John, blew his heater core & was dead in the water w/o a fix.  We might not have had any real life mechanics in the group…but boy did we have a wonderful group effort to come up with the parts needed & get him back on the road.  He made it back home to San Diego with no more issues.  Thanks to all for pitching in…he was/is extremely grateful for our group standing as one.

One more…Jan L fromTehachapi, in her beautiful blue 2 door Jeep slipped off the trail coming up & out from Dunderberg Mine.  Once again we gathered our troops, a winch at the front bumper & one at the back bumper, after hooking up she was up & out in less than 5 minutes.  All for one and one for all!

We had a fun and safe camping & wheeling trip & solidified our friendship and mutual interests.  Thanks for coming and those that missed out this year, we hope you can attend next year.
